Breakthrough

There are 2 questions with point 2:
a. what ships are being defined as transport? a cs transports 170 people... is a transport Standard and FT ships as well?
A CS doesn't transport any troop. It's not considered as a Transport ship. And yes, fast and normal transport ships are considered as transport ships ;-)

b. we all know (I hope) that "there are no ships", and there is no formation being entered to in an ocean somewhere... so does this mean if breakthrough=1 then transport def=def*2 or is it 3 or 4... or is it some other attribute that may or may not be published?
c . It could be something else as well like if breakthrough=1 then transports destroyed=killed ships * .5 etc
I don't get your point here, sorry...

the wiki (which I do read) only states that it doubles my chances to get my transports ashore... and whoever wrote that statement also wrote a negative statement about breakthrough saying it is rarely used... making it seem a waste of points...

Yes, that's a waste of points. It can't be used for a conquest... And most of the attacks are made for a conquest. Then why would it be researched ?

1. thank you for clearing up the CS question

2. If I get a spy report that says the enemy has X and I have a mathematical forumla (an approximation formula, only the devs have the real forumla) on what it takes to beat X then I know what to send... for example, the Wiki gives 6:2:4 as a ratio for a balanced defense so know that, and then knowing how my enemy usually attacks, I can make an educated guess on making an efficient defense

3. This might not be a waste, I have the few extra points... Well my thoughts were lets say that the only 2 clearing waves that I have are... One is LS and the other is OLU... well if I could send the OLU to hit 1 sec after the LS nuke using breakthrough, then I have a gerater chance of getting a larger OLU nuke into the city before they have time to stack more BR and that I could also penetrate a greater number of BR... this would also cause the enemy to have to restack Br and DLU making their job tougher...

now either this skill is a total waste of time which is why no one uses it or it is just misunderstood but without any data there is no way to know... and perhaps part of the reason is that no one is willing to use their gold and resources to experiment with it... tbh, while I would waste some resoures on it... I am not willing to waste cp or gold to sort this out..

You are correct. Breakthrough can be useful if you do not think the LS need to kill any defense boats. The main problem is that you need to kill the boats and the troops guarding a city in order to conquer it so most people will not bother to make a city specially for breakthrough attacks. When an enemy sees a breakthrough attack they know you are less likely to convert that city to defense any time soon and if they are smart will attack it often to kill off your offense units. If you feel that having a city solely for that purpose and can keep it safe then I see no reason for it not to be an asset.

copy... now I understand why breakthrough sux so bad... cuz when you use a bt attack the defending city see's it's a bt and they know that you have an Offensive city... so they just poke at it in there free time... damn that is a big downfall... now we need a hide bt attack skill :)

thanks... that clears up so much

Okay I've decided to restart this thread again so I hope somebody see's it and answers the question. I like to use fast transports with biremes because they both travel at the same speed and I feel that I neither gain nor lose anything by doing so. We know that in "breakthrough attack" a transport's chances of BT are doubled but the damage to any other type of ship is increased by 50%.

Question: If I were to use another warship with a transport in a "breakthrough" does the chances of the transports breaking through actually increase because the other warships are being sacrificed or are their chances the same as if they were sent in unescorted?

P.S. I didn't wanna start another thread so I hope somebody see's this.

We all see it. No big deal. Anyway, I have to start by asking you this:
Is it worth using biremes, for a faster travel time, over using lightships, that have 8.333 times the attack strength (ls attack value/bireme attack value)? That is a big difference. The answer is obviously no it is not.

My plan is to use 25 fast transports loaded with 25 catapults and 25 archers to knock out the city's walls completely. I don't care if other ships are sacrificed as long as the fast transport/catapults get through. I'm just wondering if I could increase their chances even more by sending in escort ships.

Don't attack with archers. Just don't.

The thing about using the Archers with the Catapults is that you don't lose them when you farm. But I guess Slingers would be better if you're attempting to take a city.

If you wanted to farm a city I would use horsemen not archers, especially if someone puts troops in the city.

Horseman you would lose and besides there isn't any room for them since they takeup 3 pop. A single fast transport would hold one catapult and one of the following: Swordsman, Slinger, Archer, or Hoplite. But the only ones that would survive after a farm would be the archers.

Actually, breakthrough is very useful in the right circumstances and with the appropriate city specialization. I think the statement "breakthrough is very misunderstood" is very much spot on! ;)
