Snipe recalls after CS - what happens to CS

I have been trying to understand snipes when the timing doesnt work. I understand that a snipe would land like 1 second before the CS and the CS would sink. But what happens if the the snipe is late and the CS is already in the harbor, then what? If its the same then why try and get the snipe at the same split second as the CS?

You are writing about Birems or DLUs here,timed to hit the city one second before the CS?

If the snipe is from another town and arrives after the CS, then the troops support the siege afterwards. If the snipe is from the town itself then the troops will attack your CS.
