Has anyone experimented and determined that this tech increases damage done by defending ships as well as attacking ships? It doesn't specify, but wanted to be sure.

Some clarification regarding Battering Ram in defense.
The additional fighting power is determined by the research done in city being defended not the city in which the boats were built. If I have researched Battering Ram and you have not, when I send my Biremes to help defend your city they WILL NOT have the added strength of BR, however, when you send your biremes to help defend my city, your boats WILL have the additional strength.
