About Mount Athos
Mount Athos is a mountain/peninsula in Northeast Greece. The mountain protrudes 50 km into the Aegean Sea. The mountain is quite steep and dangerous. King Darius of Persia lost 300 ships and a Spartan general lost around 50 ships (exact circumstances not mentioned). Mythological theories as to how the mountain was created range from Poseidon being struck with a boulder by Athos and the boulder is now the mountain to Poseidon used the mountain to bury the defeated giant. Mount Athos translates as "Holy Mountain" and has been a center for Christianity since the Byzantine Empire.
