what happens to the alliance if it has but one founder and that founder is absent to the point where the removal threshold is crossed?

You can submit a ticket and the moderators will pick whoever the founder should be (with advise from other people in the alliance) OR you could wait for the founder to leave and the person who has been a leader the longest will be promoted to founder automatically by the system.
