What is recruitment?

What is the definition in game play? One of Hera's spells increases recruitment by 100%. What does that mean?
Also, is there somewhere I can go to see what all the little icons are on the pop-up windows(i.e. launching an attack; the guys with the spears)
I am so new that I just can't figure some of these things out.

recruitment is how you get soldiers. You recruit them in the Barracks and Hera's spell makes it so you can get them twice as fast.
