Yeah, you need to have LS to escort your troops, otherwise even if you have 500 transports, and they have just one bireme, you will lose all the transports, and all the troops inside them.

No, not at all. That would actually be quite dumb... As the attacked player could send his biremes away during the LS attack and then recall them so that they arrive right before the second attack with only transports...

I like it when people do that. You dodge the Birs like Kyll said above and end up with a lot of free DBP.
