Confused - Attack and lost all ships and troops

I'm confused.

I attacked a far weaker town today, and lost all ships and troops. When looking at the report, the defender just has question marks.

Can someone tell me what happened? This isn't the first time and I'm frustrated with this. Luckily I didn't send but just a few of my navy and troops.

All your troops died and did not give back any info you need a certain amount of troops to see what you kill

If you didn't send any attack ships with your transports all it would take is 1 Bireme to destroy all your transports and troops in the harbor. Your OLUs would never even make the beach, just burn in the harbor. The basic rule of thumb is never send transports without an attack ship escort, unless you are positive there are no Biremes defending the harbor.
