Attacking a city on another island

Very new to this, but i used a transport ship and 20 hoplites to attack an inactive city on another island. This city had a point total of 305. I assumed it had, at most, a few swordsmen. The report came back saying i lost all 20 Hoplites. Am i missing something about attacking a different island?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Nothing wrong.

Your troops fought and lost the battle.
If you click over your city wall, you will see a window that shows information about your total kills. Comparing this information before and after an attack, you will see how many troops were defeated.

Before to attack a city, you can spy to know the troops defending the city and many other information (wall level...)

When you attack a city in a different island, you should send always some light ships or triremes, becuase if there is only 1 bireme in the harbor, it will defeat ALL your troops. Even when youre guessing that the city is abandoned or inactive send some LS, cause other players in the same island could defend this "farm city" by the sea (its a good culture trap).
